A question and then a venting rant:
Would you rather have me be attractive and not be able to write, or be able to write and not attractive? Honestly think about it.
Fortunately, these two traits are not mutually exclusive. For starters, I’m not very good at writing. I’m saying this to be honest, not modest. I’ve had some posts I’m very proud of and I am confident that my best posts are ahead of me. But if you want to know the truth, there are so many times when I’ve sat down and spent considerable time “writing” something only to read it the next day and realize it’s dog shit. I have 263 drafts in my draft box and ideas in my iphone and on pieces of paper on my desk. But it takes time for me to flesh these out because I’m not the best writer, and quite frankly I don’t have as much time as I used to.
Let me tell you what I am really good at: observing the subtle nuances of situations, life, and people. I see things that you might not see. The difficulty is translating these observations into words that express those observations truthfully. I don’t want to write something half-assed and throw it at the wall and hope it sticks. I want simple posts that communicate how I feel. Putting these foggy ideas into a bottle that’s ready to drink is so fucking hard. And it’s really easy to just slack off and fart in a bucket and declare it a continuation of previous work. It’s about restraint and waiting until posts encompass a fully formed idea.
I’ve already answered if I’m attractive. I’m not Brad Pitt but I don’t think any girl would object to me bending her over purely on physical grounds. Whether or not I’ve put effort that day into presenting the best of me is an entirely different matter. But ya know, you really are more interested in my mind. Because you can’t see me, you project what you want me to be onto “Keys.” If you’re into adventure, then I’m digging up lost civilizations in a Guatemalan jungle. If you’re a child at heart, then we’re catching roly polies and putting them into glass jars inside my tree house. If you’re into elegance and glamor, you’re on my arm wearing a classic black dress at a philanthropic event in London. I provide an outline and you’re filling in the holes to your preferences.
So I can’t write and I’m not the most gorgeous guy you’ve ever seen, but I am reasonably intelligent, have a sharp wit, and I’m a keen observer. Most importantly, I was loved growing up, which I’ve found out is the rarest trait anyone can have.
